Rally In Bemidji Planned Against Pipeline Project

BEMIDJI, Minn. (AP) ― Opponents of a proposed oil pipeline across northern Minnesota plan to rally in Bemidji.

After hearing speakers, the protesters say they'll take their demonstration Wednesday to Minnesota Highway 197, which goes through Bemidji.

A grass-roots group on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation is mounting a petition campaign against the pipeline planned by Enbridge Energy.

Opponents fear possible leaks from the pipeline and say the pipeline would harm wetlands in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The 1,000-mile pipeline will travel from Alberta, Canada, to Superior, Wis., carrying oil extracted from Canada's oil sands.

Enbridge states on their Web site that their four commitments when building pipelines are safety, respect of the environment, mutually productive relationships with landowners and communities and cooperating with industry and regulatory agencies.
