240 People Brave The Cold For A Bottle Of Brew

(WCCO) Minnesotans are known to camp out for things they want -- bobble heads, concert tickets, CD's -- but how about a bottle of beer?

It happened Saturday morning in Brooklyn Center. Surly Brewing Company put 480 limited-edition bottles of their Darkness beer on sale Saturday afternoon.

What would propel Joey Brown to drive from Iowa to Brooklyn Center, spend the night in a min-van with no heat, and skip a wedding his girlfriend was in? The answer is in a bottle of rare beer.

"It was a horrible idea. I (just) about froze to death ... but well worth it," said Brown.

Brown's response was not out of the ordinary. People began showing up at Surly Brewing Company just after 1:00 Saturday morning to get their hands on the Darkness.

"It's something we never expected when we brewed the beer, but that's what folks think about it. And because it's sort of climbed up these Internet rankings, it's become a really sought after beer," said Omar Ansari, president of Surly Brewing Company.

It takes six months to brew Darkness. Which is why Surly only put 480 bottles on sale Saturday.

The cost was $15 a bottle and a good night's sleep. One woman decided to sleep in and she almost paid the price.

"I'm shaking. My husband would have been very disappointed if I would not have made the cut-off," said Tracy Anderson-Haag.

At 2:00 pm all the early risers finally got their hands on the coveted brew.

"I can't wait to taste it and hopefully it will be worth the wait," said Barbara White while holding two new bottles of Darkness.

Surly is saving a few extra bottles to put on the eBay Sunday. The proceeds from the sale of those bottles will go towards a non-profit group that helps low-income families with heating issues.

Todd Bennington came Saturday so he wouldn't have to go online. People made fun of his bed head, now he's having the last laugh.

"I'm very, very excited and very, very happy that I waited out in the cold," said Bennington.

There were 240 people that showed up at Surly and each got two bottles of the Darkness. Some beer enthusiasts traveled all the way from Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Michigan just to get the limited-edition beer.
