Bachman's
"Off the charts, top class, very, very friendly.
They are very giving." Those are the words Doug Bergman uses to describe
the Bachman family.
Bergman got to know Todd and Barbara Bachman while
coaching their daughter Elisabeth in Junior Olympic volleyball.
"She was an absolute joy to be in the gym with
on a daily basis. She worked very hard and had a great attitude. She was an
"A" student, and just a real good leader," said Bergman.
Known as "Wiz" by her teammates and
coaches, her family's dedication to Lakeville has continued even after she
graduated.
"Wiz comes back every summer for camp and says
hi to the kids. And Todd came to the state tournament last year and wished us
luck," said Bergman.
The Bachman's were on hand to see Lakeville North
defeat Owatonna in the opening round of last year's State Tournament. Bergman
said that is just the type of people they are. Despite Elisabeth's success in
college and the Olympics, they have never forgotten their roots.
The Bachman's babysat Bergman's kids and he was
invited to Elisabeth's wedding when she married men's Olympic volleyball coach
Hugh McCutcheon. That is why news of Todd Bachman's death has been so hard to
take.
"It is an absolute tragedy and it struck the
whole world, the volleyball community here in town and across the country. We
are just praying for Barb and Wiz and their whole family. Susie, Sara, their
daughters, it's just an absolute tragedy," said Bergman.
Hugh McCutcheon sat out during the first Olympic
volleyball game Saturday night, but his team went on to beat Venezuela.
