Baby Born After Crash Off Life Support
FARGO, N.D. (AP) ―
A baby boy delivered by emergency Caesarean section following a two-vehicle crash in northwestern Minnesota is recovering and has been taken off a life-support machine at a hospital here.
However, Jordan's parents and doctor say his outlook remains guarded, despite his progress.
Lina Sapiegiene, a neonatal-perinatal specialist, said Jordan was born with signs of brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation and that he is at high risk for problems such as cerebral palsy.
Sapiegiene said Jordan has shown signs of improved mobility, and he could go home in a week or two if he can be taken off oxygen and receive nourishment from a bottle. He currently is being fed through a tube.
"Newborns are just amazing," she said. "If you lose one part of the brain, another part is able to take over. That is the reason there is so much unknown."
Jordan was born to Aimee Aguilar, 20, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., after she was involved in a crash on May 3. The newborn was airlifted to Fargo's MeritCare Hospital, where he initially was listed in critical condition.
Parents Joe and Aimee Aguilar said they are grateful for the prayers the family has received. Amy Aguilar, who has recovered from her injuries, credits the prayers with keeping her son alive.
"I'm just so happy he's even here," she said.
Joe Aguilar said he is hoping for the best, though he knows there will be problems.
"We would like to be able to see him smile, see him crawl, see him talk. Do some things. Just be happy," he said.
