Delivered After Crash, Baby Angel Goes Home

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― A little girl born almost four months early is finally home from the hospital. WCCO has been following Baby Angel's story since August when her mom, Jamie Baer, died after a car crash.

Kari Palashewski is Jamie's mother and she's been praying for three months that Angel could come home.

"After losing Jamie it was very hard to walk in and look at her. It always started with tears," Palashewski said.

Angel's heart wasn't beating when she was born after that August crash. At the time, Angel was about the size of a pop can. Last month she weighed three pounds and had a breathing tube blocking her face.

Now, Angel's more than doubled her size and, besides the oxygen she'll need for a while, she's healthy.

Dr. Connie Adkisson at Hennepin County Medical Center was working the night Angel was born and said it's amazing all that's happened since.

"Considering where she started from I'm just amazed and very happy for the family," Adkisson said.

Angel's family has spent weeks learning about how to care for any problems she may have and planning for the day she'll go home, through their pain of losing Jamie. On Tuesday, Angel wore the same outfit Jamie did when she was brought home from the hospital almost 23 years ago.

That's why, even through their excitement, it's hard to ignore the sadness still there.

"I know she's with me through this whole thing. She has to be," Palashewski said.

Angel is expected to be on oxygen for the next six months and stay inside until at least April so she doesn't get sick.

The Minnesota State Patrol is not finished with its investigation of the accident scene, so no charges have been filed in the case. However, the driver of the car was drinking and Jamie was in the backseat when it all happened.
