A man from St. Joseph, Minn. was charged with attempted first-degree murder after allegedly kidnapping his estranged wife.
According to charges filed at Stearns County District Court, Jerry Lee Thompson, 49, showed up at his wife's residence on Aug. 5 as she was getting ready to go to work. His wife had earlier filed a restraining order against him stemming from domestic abuse allegations.
Thompson's wife later told police he confronted her and ordered her into her car by gunpoint. He then chased her into the house where witnesses saw him threaten to kill her and himself. He brought her back to the car and left the scene with her.
According to the charges, officers received a call of the domestic incident in progress, located the car. Thompson led officers on a chase, police said, which ended when the car collided with a Stearns County deputy squad car.
Police said Thompson then attempted to grab a firearm while exiting the vehicle. An officer opened fire, wounding the suspect. Thompson is still being hospitalized for his injuries.
Thompson now faces charges on nine felony and serious felony counts, including burglary, assault and kidnapping.
