Minn. Police Officer Uses Taser On Attacking Bull

FREEPORT, Minn. (WCCO) ― A police officer had to use his Taser to control a bull that attacked a man on a farm in central Minnesota.

It happened on this dairy farm in Freeport, where a bull knocked down a 74-year-old man, and trapped his wife.

Melvin and Rose Pundsack have plenty of reason to be thankful, plenty of reasons to thank Officer Kevin Brown.

The last time they met, the Pundsacks were in trouble, trapped by a bull that got loose on the family dairy farm.

"I didn't know what to do," said Rose. "I felt so helpless, and I kept thinking how horrible it was for him to be laying down there, and not being able to help him."

Brown heard the report on his radio, and responded from nearby Albany.

"As soon as I got on the road I knew exactly what I was going to try to do," he said.

Brown was going to try to use his Taser on the animal. He'd just re-trained on it, and had enough experience on dairy farms to think it would work.

"Well, I didn't tell the bull to stop or I'm gonna Tase him," Brown said.

Once he arrived, Brown found Melvin on the ground and Rose standing on top of a snow pile. So he aimed his Taser at the bull.

"He was about 10 to 12 feet away and put his head down and started charging at me," said Brown. "I wait until he got about five to six feet away and I deployed the Taser."

"He came up there and I thought 'What is he doing? This bull is going to get him,'" said Rose. "And he held that Taser gun up to him and I think it took one or two of those and he was down."

But it all worked. And now the cows are back in the pen, and Melvin is safe, but sore.

"My knee is black and blue. It's really swollen and sore," he said.

Albany Police have carried Tasers for the last five years, but this is the first time one has been discharged. As for the bull, the family needed to put the animal down.
