State workers plan to begin examining trees around Newburg in far southeast Wisconsin late this week for more signs of the emerald ash borer.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced Monday the invasive beetle had turned up in ash tree samples taken from land near the Ozaukee County village.
Agency spokeswoman Jane Larson says crews will start dividing the region into a grid. They'll examine trees within a 3-mile radius to see if more beetles are out there. They also will start taking down and checking traps they've set for the bug.
Next month, the crews will cut and peel trees, looking for evidence of borer larvae.
The agency also plans to ban transportation of firewood outside Ozaukee County starting this week.
