Scavenger Hunt Brings Art Out Of The Gallery

(WCCO) Dozens of people headed to the Minneapolis Parks this weekend with a mission. They were looking for a 2x2 inch paintings of an octopus as part of the Minneapolis Art Hunt. It's an event organized by local artist William Hessian who wanted to move art outside of galleries.

"I think it's something that needs to be out there for free, that's more interactive, that's more of an excitement. I think art should be for everybody," he said.

Hessian hid the 35 pieces of his original work earlier this week. On Friday, he posted vague pictures of each location and only one painting was found at the Lyndale Farmstead.

By Saturday, his clues were a little easier. He said, by Sunday, the clues would give it away. You can find those clues on his web site.

Hessian used 35 pieces in honor of the 35W Bridge. He used octopuses to honor the people of Minneapolis.

"When an octopus loses an arm like in battle or something, it grows back, and it grows back stronger than when it started. I feel that Minneapolis is the exact same with the way a bridge can fall down and it can grow back and be better than it was before," he said.

Hessian said he's tried the Art Hunt in ten other cities. In each case, people found each piece of art.

The Art Hunt will run until all of the pieces are found.
