Federal environmental officials said between 400 and 500 more yards in south Minneapolis will be cleaned over the next few years to remove arsenic from the soil.
The arsenic leaked into the soil from a former pesticide plant near the intersection of 28th Street and Hiawatha Avenue.
While the plant site was cleaned and redeveloped, dozens of surrounding properties are contaminated because wind distributed the arsenic while the plant was operating from 1938 to 1963.
Health officials said the risk is low partly because much of the contaminated soil is covered by grass or other vegetation. About 200 yards with the highest levels of the poison have been cleaned up over the past few years at a cost of $3 million.
The new cleanups are scheduled to begin in 2009.
