Rosemount police have identified the victims of a deadly ammonia leak
-- including the Oklahoma truck driver who was killed -- while federal
investigators continue working to determine what caused the accident.
The leak happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday at CF Industries in
Rosemount. Two tanker truck drivers from Oklahoma were filling their tanks with ammonia when the hose somehow began to leak. The ammonia cloud overcame the two men. Two officers were also exposed to the ammonia trying to help the truck drivers.
Rosemount police said the trucker who died is Robert Larry
Shue, of Kingfisher, Okla., 31. The injured truck driver is Roy Thomas Taylor, of Moore, Okla., 56. He remains in critical condition at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
Dakota County Sheriff's Department Deputy Matt
Schuster and
Rosemount Police Department Officer Scott
Sandell tried to rescue them, but the fumes were too strong. Firefighters soon arrived with gas masks to help.
Schuster and
Sandell were taken to a hospital as a precaution. Authorities said the two responders also breathed in some ammonia, but were treated and released at Regions Hospital.
"They do have plant personnel on scene and once the discharge took place the plant personnel immediately shut down the ammonia at the loading station," said
Rosemount Police Sgt. Bryan
Burkholter.
The cause of the leak is not yet known. Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are expected Tuesday morning.
No CF employees were hurt in the accident and there was no need to evacuate the area.
