DNR To Enforce Invasive Species Law In Alexandria

(AP) Natural resources officials plan to enforce the state's invasive species laws in central Minnesota this weekend after zebra mussels were discovered near Alexandria last month.

The Department of Natural Resources says its officers will carry out more enforcement surveillance on the Alexandria chain of lakes in Douglas County starting Friday.

Zebra mussels, which are not native to Minnesota, have spread throughout the Great Lakes and to many bodies of water in the state. The mussels cause problems because they can clog water intake pipes and kill native aquatic animals.

Under state law, boaters must remove aquatic plants an animals from boats and drain all water when leaving waters that are infested with spiny water fleas or zebra mussels.

In April, DNR officials discovered zebra mussels in Prior Lake, making it the ninth inland lake in the state to be infested.
