Twin Cities Campus Won't Use UMD Alcohol Policy

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― The Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota has no plans to implement a new policy at the Duluth campus for those who call for help in alcohol emergencies.

Under UMD's new practice, students who call 911 for themselves or others will be given special consideration when police decide whether to write a ticket.

Supporters of the policy say people who call for help shouldn't be penalized, but note police retain the power to issue a citation on a case-by-case basis.

The director of Boynton Health Services says a 2004-2005 survey conducted on the Twins Cities campus found that students there would call the police regardless of the penalties.

Boynton Director Dr. Edward Ehlinger says the policy was also vetoed because a university committee thought police would be put into a bind about whether to uphold the law.
