Man Charged In Ex's Murder By Hammer

ALBERT LEA, Minn. (WCCO) ― An Albert Lea man has been charged with killing an ex-girlfriend with a hammer after he was ordered to stay away from her.

Thirty-seven-year-old Chad Gulbertson has been charged with second- and third-degree murder.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Freeborn County, police said Gulbertson went to the station Sunday morning and admitted he "may have" killed 38-year-old Jody Morrow.

He said he had gone to her house and admitted they began to argue. Police said he began crying hysterically.

Albert Lea Police Chief Dwaine Winkels said officers found the Morrow's body in her mobile home, bludgeoned to death. She had apparently tumbled from her wheelchair. She appeared to have sustained serious head injuries.

According to the charges, one of Gulbertson's family members told police he had been contacted by the accused, who was sobbing and said he had done "the stupidest thing." He said he had hit Morrow with a hammer and had killed her.

Gulbertson and Morrow had lived together. In mid-May, she got a restraining order against him, according to police.

Gulbertson is being held at the Freeborn County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 6.
