Any sports fan will tell you that it's not unusual to get into a fight during a game, especially one between rivals, but the matchup between the Vikings and Packers turned violent on Monday night.
Ryan Hinderaker, 30, of Minneapolis, faces felony charges for allegedly stabbing another football fan in the lower abdomen outside the Leaning Tower of Pizza on Lyndale Avenue in Minneapolis.
Police said Hinderaker, a Green Bay Packers fan, was getting agitated and began bickering with another fan. The fan said he didn't really care who won the Vikings/Packers showdown, because he was a Seahawks fan, but he did care that the Packers fan was being a poor sport.
Police said Hinderaker left the bar, but was followed by Leif David Heide, 41, who was going to confront him about his behavior. Hinderaker then allegedly pulled a knife out of his pocked and stabbed Heide in the lower abdomen.
Neighbor Jim Fiala was right down the block when the stabbing happened.
"With my video surveillance system which runs 24 hours a day, I began seeing the officers in the alley with the police dog and so on," Fiala said.
Fiala is a sort-of superhero of the neighborhood watch. He has a cache of cameras set up all around his property.
"I've caught the burglar from The Loon Grocery. There's been burglaries next door," said Fiala.
According to the criminal complaint, as officers searched the area for the attacker, Hinderaker called 911 and stated that he had just stabbed a man near the restaurant. Officers recovered a knife from Hinderaker's pocket and took him into custody.
The stabbing victim, 41-year-old Leif David Heide, is still in the hospital and is listed in satisfactory condition.
