Anniversary Of Minn. Bridge Collapse To Be Marked

ST. PAUL (AP) ― The August 1st anniversary of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse will include a prayer service and an outdoor memorial ceremony within view of the old bridge, now a construction site.
  
A moment of silence followed by the ringing of bells statewide will be observed at 6:05 p.m., the time the Minneapolis freeway bridge fell a year ago. The collapse killed 13 and injured more than 100.
  
Governor Tim Pawlenty and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak are announcing the public events jointly.
  
Both officials will speak about the disaster at the end of an 11 a.m. interfaith prayer service at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis.
  
An afternoon memorial ceremony will start at Gold Medal Park in Minneapolis at 4:30 p.m.
  
At 5:30 p.m., first responders and others will lead a public procession to the Stone Arch Bridge. Both the bridge and the park offer views of the Mississippi River where the bridge failed.

The original I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River opened in November 1967 and was 1,907 feet in length. The replacement bridge opened in September 2008 and measures 1,216 feet in length.
