5th Guilty Plea Entered In BWCA Shooting Spree

TWO HARBORS, Minn. (AP) ―

The last of five adults has pleaded guilty in last summer's drunken shooting spree that terrorized campers in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

Thirty-seven-year-old Barney James Lakner of Ely avoided a trial by pleading to reduced charges on five different counts.

Lakner pleaded guilty to felony aiding and abetting terroristic threats; felony aiding and abetting harassment with a firearm; felony aiding and abetting possession of an assault rifle by a minor; and two misdemeanors.

Judge Kenneth Sandvik accepted the plea. Lakner's sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 11.

The plea bargain stems from a night of drinking, boating, shooting and fireworks on Basswood Lake in the BWCAW Aug. 7, 2007. No one was hurt, but some campers said they feared for their lives and hid in the woods.
