The federal agency dissecting the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge has returned the tangled steel parts it took to the East Coast for study. It's been more than two years since the collapse killed 13 people and injured 145 others.
The bridge parts returned by the National Transportation Safety Board are stored in a 5,000-square-foot warehouse in Oakdale.
The twisted, jagged chunks of steel in the warehouse are protected from the weather so they can be examined by engineers and lawyers working on many lawsuits over the Aug. 1, 2007, collapse. The first cases go to court in March 2011. The warehouse is not open to the public.
The bridge debris not considered relevant is stored at an MnDOT yard in Afton. Other pieces that are too big to move from along the Mississippi River will be kept there indefinitely because cutting them apart to move them could compromise the evidence.
