Restaurant Prepares For Valentine's Day Proposals

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― If you're out to eat this weekend and can't help but notice the nervous guy at the next table over, it may be because he's about to pop the question.

Valentine's Day is a big day for proposals. Just ask the folks at Wolfgang Puck's 20.21 restaurant at the Walker Art Center, in Minneapolis.

With its views of the skyline and the Sculpture Garden, 20.21 is known as one of the more romantic spots in town, especially on Feb. 14.

Last Valentine's Day, the staff helped 22 different couples get engaged in one night. Asher Miller, the executive chef, said she is always aware of the pending proposal.

"Oh, we all know," Miller said. "And the server will come over and be like, 'OK guys, this is the moment, this is it.' And we're all just kind of like, 'Pretend like we're busy, you know?' And still we'll have our eyes out."

At times, they'll even have simultaneous proposals going on, in different parts of the room.

"Usually it happens towards the end of the meal," said Miller. "The guy will sort of work up the courage to do it, and so yeah, people will come in and sit down at the same time. And they get towards the end of their meal and we all know, oh, this table, this table and that table. It's all going to happen really soon, guys."

Over the years, they've been able to accommodate just about every engagement request that's come their way.

"We've never had to physically hide the ring (in food), so we haven't had any choking hazards, which is good," said Miller.

Sometimes they'll write "Will you marry me?" in chocolate on a plate, or they'll bring in oysters for the meal. They're open to suggestions.

This year, they've even added more candle-lit tables upstairs in the Skyline Room because they're expecting so many couples this year.
