MnDOT Reveals List Of 223 Road Projects
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ―
The Minnesota Department of Transportation has 223 highway and bridge projects lined up for 2009, according to a list unveiled Wednesday morning.
The combined cost of all these projects is estimated to be about $1.4 billion.
Of those projects, 51 are expected to improve roads and bridges in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, including overhauling the current Crosstown Commons, building the "triangle interchange" at Highway 169 in Brooklyn Park and Osseo, and replacing the Larpenteur Avenue bridge at Highway 280 in Lauderdale.
"People sometimes say Minnesota has two seasons -- winter and road construction. This past winter was pretty intense and this upcoming construction season will be, too," said Gov. Tim Pawlenty. "Our aim is to move people and goods faster, better and safer throughout Minnesota."
Among the projects MnDOT announced for greater Minnesota include rebuilding the Desoto Bridge in St. Cloud, reinforcing a stretch of Highway 169 in Chisholm weakened by underground mines, replacing Interstate 90 bridges in Winona County, and expanding Highway 14 south of Owatonna and building a new interchange with Interstate 35W.
Sixty-three of the 172 projects in greater Minnesota are being funded with federal stimulus money.
"MnDOT is committed to mobilizing our workers, our contractors and our partners to ensure that Minnesota's transportation dollars are spent efficiently and effectively," said transportation commissioner Tom Sorel.
