I-TEAM: Missing The Beat

"Missing the Beat" is a two-part I-TEAM series on the downtown Minneapolis foot patrol unit which aired in May 1994. Using undercover cameras, the I-TEAM spent 16 nights downtown. The news crews documented officers sleeping on the job, hanging out in strip joints and bars in the middle of their shift and a boss who was working his part-time job while he was on the city payroll.

The series outraged viewers, rocked City Hall and led to a complete overhaul of the unit, along with suspensions of some officers and the firing of the lieutenant in charge of the unit.

The series also received several awards, including the Dupont-Columbia. It was also featured on an edition of the Oprah show which focused on undercover reporting. I-TEAM reporter Caroline Lowe was one of three reporters who appeared on that show.
