In The Know: Retiring 'Katrina' Hero Reprimanded

(WCCO) A New Orleans police officer who fought to save the people of his city in the wake of Hurricane Katrina retired Thursday after 35 years on duty. Don Shelby tells how the man was reprimanded in the last 15 minutes of his career.

Seriously. The New Orleans Internal Affairs Division has launched an investigation into Sergeant Robert L. Guidry. Was he stealing drugs from the property room? No. He wore the wrong shirt on his last day. It was unauthorized.

He wore the original powder blue shirt that he wore during Katrina. He always wears that shirt when he attends a service, he wore it to honor the 18 officers killed as Katrina blew through. He wore it to every one of their funerals. He wanted to wear it on the last day as his final salute to his fallen comrades.

But, with fifteen minutes left in his career, they wrote him up. See, New Orleans changed uniforms after Katrina. And there have been so many complaints about the new all black, incredibly hot uniforms that the chief has actually decided to go back to the powder blue shirts… the one Sgt. Guidry wore Thursday.

Now, I love New Orleans, its food, character, history and people. But the guy who wrote up Sgt. Guidry on his last day, not so much.
