In The Know: Escaping The Political Hullaballoo
(WCCO)
There's a little more than 50 days left before election day, and already we are detecting burnout on political commercials and conventions. Among the at-risk burnouts is Don Shelby, but he's about to take the cure.
Because I read the news every night, I have a notion of how things stand in the world, and incessant political commercials aren't really dealing with the major problems we face, so I suppose, like many of you, I need a break.
When it all begins to feel like too much, there is one place for me, and fortunately, it is a place available to you. The woods.
This weekend, I'm going to Ely to celebrate Sigurd Olson's groundbreaking work in saving the BWCA, and I'll spend some time at his old cabin at Listening Point on Burntside Lake.
I'll listen to the wind and listen to the song of the loon and maybe I'll have a chance to hear a wolf howl. I'll canoe a little, and maybe wet a line, and most important, I will be at peace.
I wish it for you. There is no question that there are momentous problems facing us in a world that has gone a little insane, it seems. It will be much easier to face that, after a little dose of sanity courtesy of Mother Nature's sanctuary.
