In The Know: Goodbye To Rusty
(WCCO)
The bad news just keeps mounting. Wall Street, the housing market, the collapse of insurance giant AIG and Lehman Brothers. But Don Shelby's mind is not on the big stories, but one that won't even earn a mention outside his family.
Her name was Rusty. The children were very young when we got her from the pound. She was orange, like a retriever, but she wasn't of that class. Her eyes were beautiful though, like she had on mascara. She had one floppy ear.
She was gentle with children, even in her 17th year, crippled with arthritis, blind and deaf. She let the 17-month-old grandson pull her hair. She loved him.
But, today, we said goodbye to this member of the family. The doctor said there was nothing more she could do.
My wife and I, as so many of you have had to do, contemplated whether we could urge a few more months out of her, but that just seemed like torture, and that's nothing we could ever do to this good dog.
But, we were there, and held her and petted her until she was gone. We left her, it seemed, sleeping -- the most peaceful sleep she has known for years. She's in better place now. The family, who loved her, is not.
