In The Know: That Quiet Neighbor May Be A Spy
(WCCO)
When CIA analyst Valerie Plame was outed, the U.S. government launched a criminal investigation. Now the U.S. government is outing 24,000 agents from a long time ago. Don Shelby says some of the names have been leaked, and it is all legal.
You joined the OSS, the Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of the CIA, during World War II. You were a spy. You wore disguises, you worked behind enemy lines gathering intelligence, you did secret operations. You risked your life and you kept the secret because the government asked you to.
Now, all of those agent names will become public because the government says it will do no harm now.
Some names have gotten to us already.
Julia Child was a spy, and later, a darned good French cook. Arthur Goldberg, a justice of Supreme Court was a spy. Moe Berg, a Chicago White Sox catcher was a spy with a pretty good batting average. There was the actor Sterling Hayden of the "Godfather" and "Dr. Strangelove."
One guy, Walter Mess, who is 93 now, never told anybody he was a spy, not even his wife of 62 years.
I can't wait for the full list. I've always wondered about that old guy next door. He hasn't spoken a word to me in 20 years. I know he's hiding something.
