In The Know: Someone Sold Yellowcake To Hussein

(WCCO) The United States has shipped 550 metric tons of concentrated uranium known as yellowcake to Canada. It was found stockpiled in Iraq. Don Shelby says we've been told that Saddam Hussein didn't have a nuclear weapons program.

I'm often confused when the president says one thing and then critics, backed by investigations, say another. Going into Iraq, there were charges that Saddam was a threat because he intended to build nuclear weapons. Heck, Israel dropped a bomb on a nuclear reactor back in 1981.

But critics of the war say Saddam's nuclear ambitions were just a lie. When envoy Joseph Wilson went to Niger to find out whether Saddam Hussein was trying to buy yellowcake from that country, he said Iraq wasn't in the market.

Well, now that doesn't surprise me, knowing he had 550 metric tons of the stuff in his backyard. Even as critics called Saddam's nuclear ambitions a lie, the U.N. inspectors knew it was there, and has been guarding it since 1991 so it couldn't be pilfered by terrorists.

Inspectors said Saddam didn't have a current nuclear weapons program, but another investigation is called for. I want to know who sold him 500 metric tons of the stuff in the first place.
