In The Know: Does Age Bring Happiness?
(WCCO)
Finally, some good news for the old folks. Two new studies in the American Sociological Review say older people are happier than younger people. Don, no spring chicken himself (in his words), could have told you that.
The happiest people in America are older than 80.
First, they must be happy that they got that far. They, also, don't have to be worried about having their jobs shipped overseas, or their company merging with another and their jobs eliminated.
Their kids are nearly sixty now, and don't need to show up very often to bail them out of jail. And, the government pays a portion of the cost of the drugs the older folks take. The government doesn't do that for young people.
But, of course, the older folks aren't taking the same drugs the younger generations likes the most.
And, happiness comes cheaper for older people than younger folks. A young person might be happy with a 4,000 square foot house and a sports car.
An older person might be just as happy if someone in the family remembers their... birthday. When my Dad retired, I asked him how it was, and he said, "When I get up in the morning I have absolutely nothing to do, and by noon I'm two hours behind."
Now, that's what I call happiness.
