In The Know: When 'Guy News' Was The Norm

(WCCO) This evening, because of vacation schedules, the news, sports and weather is presented tonight on WCCO-TV by men only. Don Shelby says there was a time when that wouldn't have looked odd at all.

Let's admit it. It looks odd, and feels odd, just having a bunch of guys sitting at the news desk.  But, not long ago guy-news was the norm.

I remember how hard it was, after years of Murrow and Cronkite and Huntley and Brinkley to actually say the word, "anchorwoman."

Then Susann Spencer broke the gender barrier here and anchored with Dave Moore in The Scene Tonight. Pat Miles followed. And Colleen, and Cindy and Amelia had not only hope of equality, but the audience expectation that times had changed for the better.

But, it never accepted Connie Chung with Dan Rather, or Barbara Walters and Harry Reasoner. CBS is on pins and needles wondering whether the audience will completely accept Katie Couric.

My guess is they will accept a woman anchoring the national news long before the audience ever decides to return to the all-man team, like this one tonight.

Personally, I like sitting next to Amelia better. But, Frank tells better jokes during the commercials.
