In The Know: Tomorrow's Leaders

(WCCO) For politics in America, Minnesota is the center of the universe this week. Don Shelby said, for most people, there was a bigger story today than a convention.

The big news story for every day folks happened today, and it wasn't at the Xcel Energy Center. It was the first day of school.

Presidential elections pale by comparison to the moment a child gets on a school bus and heads off to begin, in earnest, the work of building the future for the rest of us.

I don't intend to say this November's election is not important. It is, of course. I'm just here to say that the everyday stuff we do, like choosing the right school, of making that first day in a formal learning environment a wonderful experience for our children, is as important as anything you and I will ever do.

The fear and excitement of going off for the first day away from Mom and Dad, into a strange place not called home, is not unlike the trepidation some people feel about the direction of our country.

But, if we are to have an intelligent leadership for this America, it doesn't start with conventions. It starts with the first day of school.
