Don Shelby To Share MN Soldier Stories In Iraq

(WCCO) Don Shelby and photojournalist Tom Aviles are on assignment in Iraq covering the Minnesota Army National Guard. They are embedded with the 34th Infantry Division, also known as the "Red Bulls," and will present an inside look into the lives of soldiers from Minnesota.

Shelby's first report from Iraq will be on Sunday's 10 p.m. news.

"These men and women are professionals in our community," said Shelby. "Not only are they on the front lines as soldiers, but they also extend their skills and experiences with Iraqi communities. It is my honor to share their stories with the people back home."

Members of the Red Bull Infantry Division left Minnesota for training on Feb. 13 for a one-year deployment. The four Minnesota National Guard units are from the communities of Rosemount, Inver Grove Heights, Faribault and Stillwater.

The Red Bulls is operating out of Basra, which is located in the southern third of Iraq. It is responsible for for the provinces south of Baghdad, west to Al Anbar province, south of the nation of Saudi Arabia, and east to the Iranian border. It is an area roughly the size of Minnesota with a combined population of 8.5 million.

"The benefit to reporting these kinds of stories, reminds us all that we are in a war, which is being fought by our neighbors, friends and family," said Scott Libin, WCCO-TV's news director. "These citizen soldiers have left jobs and families in Minnesota towns, and now have the opportunity to help the Iraqi people rebuild their country."
