The House passed the health care bill Saturday night only after it
sharply restricted abortion coverage for women, even those who pay
their own premiums. Minnesota Senator Al Franken said that goes too far.
Abortion coverage would not be available to any woman using the government run public option. The bill also forbids coverage for women who shop for private insurance on a new government exchange, and pay for it themselves.
"This doesn't even allow a woman to buy with their own money insurance coverage that provides that kind of care for her in the exchange. And I just think that's not right," said Senator Al Franken.
Most private insurance companies do offer abortion services for women.
The House bill would require them to purchase separate abortion polices if they think they would ever get one.
Abortion rights Democrats are furious. One member said she has already collected 40 signatures of members who say they won't vote for any final bill with the anti-abortion language -- enough to kill the bill.
