Preview: Michele Tafoya's Battle With Infertility

by Michelle Tafoya
(WCCO) Michele Tafoya is coming home; from WCCO-TV sports reporter to the sidelines of the NFL for Monday Night Football.

Tafoya certainly has a successful career but success in her private life has been a lot harder to come by.

She gives us a look at the very personal story, in her own words, which she'll share Thursday at 10:

Every fall, every Monday, I know where I'll be: In a stadium somewhere talking football.  A couple years ago I was sidelined from my job for a pretty great reason -- the birth of my son.

I never dreamed it would be so hard to get pregnant. I figured my good health would make up for my late start.

My fertility specialist told me it doesn't work that way. The older you are, the harder it is to get -- and stay -- pregnant.

"The risk of miscarriage increases dramatically as a woman gets older," said Dr. Paul Kuneck. "At age 40, if she said to me, 'What if I got pregnant, what's my risk of miscarriage?' I would tell her, at 40, your risk of miscarriage is probably about 25 to 30 percent. If she was 42, I would tell her, her chance of miscarriage is 50 percent."

I was in my late thirties then, so I wasn't thrilled with what the doctor was saying.

Tonight at ten, I'll tell you more about my long path to parenthood.  I'll also introduce you to others who've been through infertility.  We'll let you know what you should, and shouldn't say, to friends and family struggling to start a family.
