House Set To Vote On Mental Health Parity Bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ― The House is scheduled to vote next Wednesday on mental health parity legislation named for the late Senator Paul Wellstone.

The bill would require equal health insurance coverage for mental and physical illnesses when policies cover both.

It's sponsored by Rhode Island Democrat Patrick Kennedy and Minnesota Republican Jim Ramstad. Ramstad plans to retire at the end of the year -- but has said he wants to see the bill passed before he goes.

Wellstone, a Minnesota Democrat who was killed in a plane crash in 2002, championed the mental health parity cause for years. His son, David Wellstone, is pushing the bill. He has argued that a bill that passed the Senate last year doesn't go far enough.

David Wellstone is urging activists to call House members next Tuesday to push for passage.
