Are Your Kids Eating The Worst Foods?
by Jeanette Trompeter
(WCCO)
Some of the worst foods for kids are some of the things that children are eating the most, according to dieticians.
Dina Swanson said her kids are nutty over chicken nuggets.
"I know that's not a great food item -- but we were in a rush" said the mom from Maple Grove.
It's a good thing she limits the nuggets-- this favorite food is fatty.
"Chicken nuggets are usually fried when they're prepared, so that's going to add a lot of fat," said Michelle Flatt, a registered dietician with the University of Minnesota.
The number one vegetable among children is indeed the French Fry, said Flatt.
"French fries are typically fried making them really high in fat
baking them is a better choice," Flatt said.
But who can have just one?
"Kids don't just eat a handful -- they eat a lot of French Fries. And they might eat French fries a few times a day
that really starts to add up," Flatt said.
Maureen Finley is a mom with three kids, the Plymouth resident said she knows fruit snack, but her kids like them.
"Fruit snacks are their favorite -- bar none favorite snack," Finley said.
Fruit snacks are packed with sugar and have minimum nutrients, Flatt said.
"It's just not worth it," Flatt said.
Here's a healthy tip to help parents better prepare meals.
Make some meals on the weekend, and throw them in the freezer so you have food during the week. You know you're really making an investment in your child by feeding them the right foods now.
