The Centers for Disease Control is reminding folks to keep their guard up when it comes to holidays and the flu. It says the cases of H1N1 may be coming down, but the threat is still there.
Friday in St. Paul, Ramsey County hosted their first public H1N1 vaccine clinic at Arlington High School. Last week the date of the clinic had to be pushed back and the number of clinics was cut from four to two, once it was announced they wouldn't get as much vaccine as requested.
A line started forming at the clinic about two hours before it would open at 6 p.m. There were about 5,700 doses to be distributed between Friday and Saturday.
The clinic focused on the uninsured. Notes were sent home with students and calls were made to parents to let them know insurance information or proof of the child's age were not required, and the shots would be free.
Another Ramsey County clinic will be held Saturday at North Heights Lutheran Church in Roseville from 9 a.m. to noon.
Also on Friday, Hennepin County held its second public vaccine clinic. It opened in New Hope at 2:30 p.m. and lasted for five hours. There, people started lining up at around 1 p.m. About 2,000 people were expected because the criteria for recipients was expanded beyond young children to include pregnant women, children 10 to 18 years old with chronic health conditions and caregivers of children younger than 6 years old.
Parents at the clinic said it was well worth the wait.
"I heard that people are dying from it," said mother Leah Walk. "I don't want my baby to die or anything. I don't want her to get sick."
"It's very frustrating, and yes, I'm very happy to have it done, just get it out of the way, off of our backs and we don't have to worry about it," said mother Sandy Girod.
Both Hennepin and Ramsey counties hope to have more vaccination clinics in December.
