Clogged Pipe To Blame For Manure-Soiled Beach

PIPESTONE, Minn. (AP) ― A dairy farm's clogged pipe is blamed for a manure spill that has closed the beach at a southwestern Minnesota state park.

State officials say the beach at Split Rock Creek State Park in Pipestone County was closed over the Memorial Day weekend because of the spill of 250,000 to 300,000 gallons of manure.

The beach will remain closed for all of this week and will not open until testing shows the fecal coliform level has been reduced. Boating and other activities are not affected.

County environmental administrator Kyle Krier says the spill happened on May 4 about seven miles north of the park when a pipe became plugged, causing one of the manure holding ponds to overflow.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is investigating the spill.

Manure usually consists of the feces and urine of livestock, sometimes including the added material of straw or hay.
