Band Front-Man Talks About Cancer Diagnosis

(WCCO) The front man of a well-known Twin Cities band is talking about his battle with cancer. Last week, Brian Leighton of G.B. Leighton learned he has testicular cancer. Doctors are optimistic they caught it in time.

It's still hard for him to sing after his surgery. But after just seven days, Brian Leighton is finding a new voice.

"It happened so fast that until I heard a radio announcer announce that Brian Leighton was diagnosed with cancer then it kind of hit me when you hear that word and somebody talking about it," Leighton said.

It started as a spot that didn't feel right and after it grew over a few days, it ended with a rushed procedure to remove it.

"I was the last person to ever think something like that would happen to me. But check them out. That's why they tell us to do it, so you can catch it right away and catch it early," he said.

On the Minnesota music scene for more than 20 years, Leighton's sold 90,000 albums and built a name for his band around giving back. So, when hundreds of fans packed into Bunkers last week for a benefit, this time it was Leighton on the receiving end.

"I feel pretty fortunate and I think I should take advantage of that second chance here and be healthier and be smarter," Leighton said.

Leighton took the stage at Bunkers Wednesday night. He'll meet with doctors later this week who will decide if he'll have chemotherapy.
