Bone Marrow Donor Drive To Honor Minn. Librarian

SHOREVIEW, Minn. (WCCO) ― Next week is your chance to sign up to save a life. The National Marrow Donor Program is in the midst of its drive to help the 6,000 adults and children who look for a match online each day.

A Minnesota school worker's illness inspired her students and friends to act.

Teachers will tell you stories of their students and stories of helping children succeed. They often give positive encouragement to youngsters. Now, some students are giving back to their teacher.

"I hope you feel better soon. Sick or not, you'll always be my favorite librarian," read a card sent to Trapp.

Kay Trapp has been the librarian at Turtle Lake Elementary in Shoreview for 25 years.

"We call the library the heart of the school and she's kind of the heart of the library," said Morse.

When Michelle, neighbors and friends all found out that Trapp had leukemia, they helped. Some made food, which filled the family's freezer.

"It's also fun to see the fun note that people put on the food they gave us," remarked Trapp.

Others found a different sort of comfort, such as a friendship quilt.

"Just so many gifts given... that is totally... You knowm, I wanna be be able to say... I'd like to give back," said Trapp.

Trapp has been through numerous rounds of chemotherapy for her type of cancer. She might even need a bone marrow transplant someday. So, she's encouraging people to give.

"I need to do that. It's a calling. I have to do that," explained Trapp.

So are her friends. They organized a donor drive in her name and have been making signs to get people to the event.

"That's the message we want to get out, is that ou might be the only person that matches someone, but they're not going to know that, unless you're on the registry," said Morse.

Trapp knows the need is great. She's living proof. She continues her medical struggles and is finding time to write "thank you's" to those who've helped her.

She looks forward to going back to school to see her students someday.

"I'm excited to get on my way on my recovery," said Trapp.

Signing up to donate bone marrow usually costs about $50. At the event on May 12 though, it's free.
