Good To Know: Fixing The Election Imperfections

(WCCO) As you now know, Minnesota's long, drawn-out Senate contest is over. But Don Shelby says the questions about our election process continue.

Coleman supporters are upset. Franken backers are happy. That's the way it always is.

Somebody wins, somebody loses.

Both Mr. Coleman and soon to be Sen. Franken were gracious to one another after an ugly campaign and an interminable court fight.

But what isn't over is the question of why one county can reject ballots for one reason and another county in the state reject ballots for another reason altogether. The state Supreme Court was looking for intent to do wrong.

It found none.

But this fight exposed the disturbing imperfections of our state elections system. Under such microscopic examination, any state in this union, would find similar, if not worse, imperfections.

I hope this episode will cause us to fix the ones we found. I don't think we're satisfied with a system that wrongly disenfranchises any voter, no matter who they voted for.
