Good To Know: Embarrassment After Obama's Speech

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― President Obama is set to address the nation's school children on September 8. Five states won't allow the speech live, and others are trying to figure out how to review the talk before letting student's see and hear it. Don, who has read the transcript of the talk, says tomorrow there will be much egg on critics' faces.

The head of Florida's Republican party said he was, quote, "absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama's socialist ideology." He is one of the people who will be embarrassed by his own remarks once he reads the speech.

He'll be embarrassed because this speech could have been written by my father, a staunch Republican.

President Obama talks about the personal responsibility of each student for their own education. He says, there's no excuse for talking back to your teachers, cutting class or neglecting your schoolwork.

The anger over the speech is so much political theater.

The Democrats who are crying foul, did exactly what the Republicans are doing now when President George H.W. Bush tried to talk directly to students. They raised a stink and politicized Bush's very similar message.

The students are learning an important civics lesson over all this though. In politics, what goes around comes around.
