Good To Know: Down Economy, Internet Still Booming
(WCCO)
A new Pew Research Center survey says more Americans are getting connected to Internet and most of them are choosing the much faster broadband connections. Don Shelby says even in a down economy, the Internet is booming business.
Despite high unemployment, layoffs and a lower standard of living generally, big pipe Internet has taken off again. The study says some big gains were made among senior citizens and low-income Americans.
Still, Internet use is the highest among the richest and the most educated. But Pew found an interesting trend that does relate to the economy.
Nine percent of respondents said they had to give up the Internet all together; 22 percent gave up cable television instead rather than part with the web. Another 22 percent said they'd given up cell phones in order to pay Internet bills.
Thirteen percent of adults said the Internet holds no relevance in their lives.
Any way you cut it, the Internet is a must in most American households, regardless of economics. Surfing, it appears, is the new American pastime.
