Good To Know: A Lucky Day For All Of Us

(WCCO) Saturday is the 233rd birthday of our independence. Don Shelby thought it'd be good to know why he's proud to call it his favorite day.

Because I'm proud to be an American. Not in a jingoistic way. You know, I had two questions for my Dad once, and he had no answer to either.

I asked him, "How did I get so lucky as to be born into my family with you and Mom and Bob and Sally. How'd that happen?"

And, then I asked the one pertinent to this holiday. I said, "Dad, how did I get so lucky to be an American."

He couldn't answer it, but understood why I asked it. I think he said, "Just lucky, I guess."

We are far from perfect, but I'm perfectly happy we keep trying to get there; that we are free to attempt to correct our mistakes. I don't think of barbeques, or fishing, or fireworks on the Fourth of July. I just think of it as my lucky day.
