Good To Know: Health Care Reform Makes A Base Hit
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ―
With the successes of the Vikings and the Twins, a Minnesotan might just forget for a moment that the nation is struggling with the idea of health insurance reform. Don Shelby said a number of things have changed while we've been otherwise occupied.
The first thing that happened is a newly released poll showing that about an equal number of people are onboard for health care reform.
It used to be lopsided to the "no" side. Then, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office shows the Senate health care reform package would not add to the budget deficit, but reduce it by $81 billion.
And, now, republicans are coming out in favor of reform. Former presidential candidate Robert Dole said he was asked by Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell asked him to keep quiet, but Dole refused, saying a vote for health care reform will be the most important vote a member of Congress will make in his or her lifetime.
Dole joins Republican Tommy Thompson, former secretary of Health and Human Services, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and tentatively, Bill Frist in saying reform is necessary. After 10 presidents have tried it, is this the year it happens?
