Good To Know: Baucus' Bill A Baby Step
(WCCO)
The Senate Finance Committee has passed its version of a health care reform package with the support of one Republican. The President may be right that this is a step forward, but in truth, it is a baby step.
This piece of legislation is called the Baucus bill. Apt name. A lot of lawmakers are balking.
The House has got to vote on its version of the healthcare bill, and when the two chambers have something they can agree upon, the bill moves to a conference committee of House and Senate conferees where the bill will be further weakened or strengthened according to your politics.
It won't be easy. The house version has a public option. The Senate version does not.
The House bill mandates that all but the smallest employers would be required to provide insurance. The Senate bill doesn't really.
The House would pay the trillion dollar price tag by taxing rich Americans. The Senate bill by taxing health plans, drug companies and medical device makers.
This isn't the first inning. This is the first pitch of the first inning.
