Good To Know: Journalists Roped Into Reality TV

(WCCO) Almost continuously since it happened, there have been stories on the "balloon boy hoax." Monday, Don Shelby added another 45 seconds to the over-covered, made-for-TV drama. He says, in the battle between reality TV and journalism, it looks like reality TV is winning.

I know there are millions of people who like reality TV, but does reality TV really like you? I doubt it. Nobody who likes you will knowingly take advantage of you.

Journalists are another story. Tell us a child is missing and may be in a flying saucer balloon, and we will believe you. We disbelieve you at our peril. Because, after all, you might be telling the truth, and if we are not there with our cameras, if it turns out to be true, we get beaten on the biggest story of the year.

But, reality TV doesn't have rules. And a veteran reality TV guy was running the show apparently, and he wanted another one of his own. The test will come whether the boys' father is now out of the running, or if he has just made himself the next big reality TV star.
