Good To Know: Is Golf Really A Sport?

(WCCO) The International Olympic Committee is considering making golf and Rugby Olympic sports. Don asks, is golf really a sport?

There are mixed feelings about that just as there are questions about whether thoroughbred race jockeys and NASCAR drivers are athletes.

In major league sports, the test is whether you have someone trying to stop you from doing your best.

In basketball, someone guards you. In football, someone tackles you. In baseball, a pitcher is trying to strike you out. In tennis, the other player is trying to blow an ace by you at lightning speed.

A professional golfer never has to worry about being tackled as he or she lines up for a put or a drive.

Try hitting a hundred practice drives. Then play 18, five days straight of under par golf. Walk the thousands of yards of course, often uphill.

And take a look at Tiger Woods body and there's no question--you have an athlete.

Then, of course, there's John Daly.
