This weekend, the gay, lesbian and transgender community will be gathering in the Twin Cities to celebrate pride.
This year, Twin Cities Pride celebrates its 37th year. It started in 1972 as a small gathering and has grown exponentially; currently the event attracts hundreds of thousands of people. Organizers claim it to be the nation's third-largest annual gay pride celebration.
"Our Rights, Your Rights, Human Rights" is the theme of the 2009 Twin Cities Pride celebrations, as advertised on the festival's Web site.
This will be the first Pride celebration held during a month given official presidential proclamation as GLBT Pride Month since Bill Clinton held office. Pres. Barack Obama
issued the proclamation on June 1.
The Pride festivities will be held Saturday and Sunday with a Pride Festival in Loring Park, including live concert performances from the '80s pop group Expose, a history pavilion on the east end of the lake in Loring Park, a country-western dancing tent, and sporting tournaments in volleyball and 3-on-3 basketball.
On Sunday, the Ashley Rukes GLBT Pride Parade will make its way down Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis at 11 a.m. The Web site lists nearly 140 entries in the parade.
Additionally, there will be any number of ancillary activities connected with Pride celebrations around the Twin Cities metro. There is a Pride block party in Uptown Friday evening. The Twin Cities Gay Mens Chorus performs both Friday and Saturday evenings at the Ted Mann Concert Hall. There will also be a 5K run at Lake Calhoun on Saturday morning.

Twin Cities Pride Web site.
