Men Arrested In Slaughterhouse Raid Perform Play

(AP) Seven Mexican and Guatemalan men who were arrested and detained in a raid on a kosher slaughterhouse last year in Iowa are coming to Minneapolis to perform a play they wrote about the experience.

"La Historia de Nuestras Vida," or The Story of Our Lives, will be staged Friday night at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in south Minneapolis. The play is performed in Spanish, but audience members will be provided a playbill with an English translation.

The Agriprocessors plant in Postville, Iowa was the site of a raid in May 2008 that led to the arrest of 389 immigrant workers. The seven men who wrote the play have been performing it in recent weeks in the Upper Midwest.

In 2006, there were immigration raids on meatpacking plants in six states that experts said could fundamentally change the industry if crackdowns spread to other slaughterhouses, potentially forcing companies to pay higher wages and raising the price of meat for consumers.
