'Rage' Turns Up At Protest Music Fest

ST. PAUL (AP) ― On the fringes of the Republican National Convention, the rock band Rage Against the Machine turned up unannounced at RippleEffect, a protest music festival on the grounds of the Minnesota State Capitol.

Police told band members they couldn't play because they weren't listed on a permit, so the band walked to a nearby courtyard and began singing and chanting, using megaphones.

Zacc Fricke of Minneapolis says he was among about 1,000 people at the concert when Rage Against the Machine appeared. He says everyone was chanting and singing along together.

The band departed at 7 p.m. after police told them the permit for the event expired.

Rage Against the Machine is playing a concert Wednesday night at the Target Center in Minneapolis, about 10 miles from where the convention is being held in St. Paul.
