Students Get Schooled On Hip-Hop At Minn. College

ST. PAUL (AP) ― A Minnesota music school is giving aspiring hip-hop artists a chance to polish their skills in the classroom.

McNally Smith College of Music in downtown St. Paul has started what school officials said is the first hip-hop diploma program in the U.S.

The program started in September with 14 students and eight teachers. McNally Smith officials hope the first hip-hop students receive their certificates at commencement next summer.

DJ techniques and the language of rap are among the courses. McNally Smith officials said hip-hop has become a dominating commercial force and deserves serious study. Students say they enjoy the chance to learn from rappers and DJs.
